Get Ahead of Spring Pest Pressure Before It Gets Ahead of You

In our last post we talked about why spring 2026 is shaping up to be drier and hotter than usual, with an El Niño pattern strengthening through the season. That same warmth has a second, less-talked-about effect: it speeds up the pest life cycle. Aphids, thrips and red spider mite all breed faster in warm conditions, and South African growers consistently report that short winters and early heat are what tip a manageable pest presence into a full outbreak.
The good news is that this is one of the most predictable parts of the season. If you know pest pressure is coming, the highest-leverage moment to act is before populations build, not after.
Why early spring is the window that matters
Aphids, thrips and mites overwinter in plant debris and weeds, then re-establish as temperatures rise. In warmer climates, thrips in particular can breed continuously rather than pausing over winter, which means a mild, early spring gives them a running start. By the time damage is visible on new growth, several generations may already be established — and each generation is faster to control than the next.
This is exactly why scouting matters more in early spring than at almost any other point in the season. A few minutes checking the undersides of new leaves and growing tips, twice a week, catches problems while a targeted biological still has the upper hand.
Building a biological-first defence
Biological controls work best used early and preventatively, rather than as a rescue treatment once a pest population has exploded — which is the opposite of how many growers are used to thinking about pest control. A few of the tools worth having in place before pressure builds:
● For soft-bodied pests (aphids, whitefly, mites, thrips): Beauveria bassiana-based biologicals (e.g. Eco-Bb) infect and control target pests without disrupting the beneficial insects that would otherwise help keep populations in check.
● For caterpillar pressure: Bacillus thuringiensis-based products (e.g. Delfin) target lepidopteran larvae specifically, making them a good fit for IPM programmes where preserving pollinators and natural predators matters.
● As a broad-spectrum first line of defence: Pure Cold Pressed Neem Seed Oil disrupts feeding and breeding across a wide range of soft-bodied pests and is gentle enough to use regularly through the season (see spotlight below).
● For disease pressure that often follows pest damage: a preventative biofungicide (e.g. Double Nickel 55) helps protect wounded or stressed tissue from opportunistic fungal infection.
Spotlight: why neem oil earns its place in every spring programme
If there’s one product worth having on hand before spring pest pressure builds, it’s neem oil — and it’s consistently one of our best sellers for exactly this reason. - Feeding deterrent: treated foliage becomes unpalatable, so sap-sucking and chewing pests move on or feed far less.

Because it works this broadly and has a short pre-harvest interval, neem fits naturally into a weekly or fortnightly preventative rotation alongside the more targeted biologicals above, rather than being kept in reserve for when things have already gone wrong.

A simple early-spring routine
- Scout twice weekly: focus on new growth, leaf undersides and growing tips — this is where aphids and thrips show up first.
- Treat at first sighting, not first damage: biologicals are most effective against small, establishing populations rather than mature infestations.
- Rotate modes of action: even within a biological programme, alternating products helps prevent pest populations from adapting.
- Keep the surrounding area clean: clearing old plant debris and weeds removes the overwintering sites these pests rely on to get their early start.
The bigger picture
None of this is about reacting harder once the season heats up — it’s about being in position before it does. A biological programme started early is cheaper, gentler on beneficial insects, and considerably less stressful than trying to fight an established outbreak in the middle of summer.
